Centred on the distinctive pin‑matrix patch-bay and potentiometers of a circa fifty–year–old EMS Synthi analogue synthesizer, ‘Analogue Intelligences’ is a drone performance for feedback loops, crosstalk, and tipping points, relating to the synthesiser more as organism than as instrument via ‘relational listening’ (Barton and Hulbert, 2025). Beyond the analogue technologies themselves, the piece’s title nods to the cybernetic idea of systems as analogues of intelligence, or, at least, adaptive behaviour, especially in the musical domain (Roddy and Bridges, 2025). This recalls EMS originator Peter Zinovieff’s connection with the fertile and optimistic early cultural moment of cybernetics-influenced art––the Cybernetic Serendipity exhibition (Reichardt, 1968) at London’s ICA––whilst also offering a quizzical take on our more fraught contemporary relationship with machine learning.
